Many local businesses continue to struggle amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. What programs or other actions would you support in the next six months to aid economic recovery?

The best ideas come from the people- those who are working in particular industries or facing specific challenges personally or professionally. There’s been excellent feedback from Elevate on how they can utilize resources to continue to help businesses and residents (rent and utility assistance, low-to-no interest loans with grant forgiveness for local businesses, and the Payroll Promotion Program to name a few). Another example is feedback from our local meat processors letting us know the kind of help processors in Montana received in COVID funding and how SD processors would similarly benefit (to avoid future unnecessary euthanizing of animals and threat to livestock). These are only a few of several solid ideas. Securing food, shelter and safe environments for residents, helping businesses recover to support our workforce so they can support their families, and looking toward sustainable future growth are at the center of what I will gladly support to help us move forward.

What do you believe is vital to promoting quality economic growth in western South Dakota?

There are several key components to promoting quality economic growth and development in western South Dakota. We need more comprehensive programs for workforce development through accessible, affordable training. We need to sustain support of the high school to career pathways being developed within RCAS with our universities and technical schools and address how to expand those opportunities to rural school districts. We need to broaden opportunities for leadership development and mentorship in all industries. We should look at ways (particularly in Rapid City) that we can address some of the challenges to entrepreneurship, such as zoning barriers and economical commercial leasing options with more flexible terms. This will provide a more welcoming business climate to budding and expanding business owners and will also help to fill up some of our retail and commercial deserts like downtown Rapid City, Rushmore Crossing, downtown Hot Springs, Hill City, and “off season” downtown Sturgis.

What is your favorite Black Hills Area business to support?

One of my favorite Black Hills Area businesses to support is the South Dakota Air and Space Museum. Our preschool has taken hundreds of children there over the past ten years and their staff is always so kind, patient and informative. It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to teach the children about the importance of our military, the impact of Ellsworth Air Force Base in our community, and of course, it’s always a lot of fun to look at all the cool planes and helicopters!

Many local businesses continue to struggle amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. What programs or other actions would you support in the next six months to aid economic recovery?

Lift any mask mandates.  All other programs will self-correct.  Preventing local government from undue restrictions on Commerce.  I would also encourage businesses to bring creative ideas to the table to expand their businesses.  We need to:  prioritize people, understand existing trends, and create adaptive, long-term solutions.  The response to the current crisis evolves daily, but what we’ve learned already can begin to supplement what we know from the past.

What do you believe is vital to promoting quality economic growth in western South Dakota?

I would deliver historic tax and regulatory reforms and continue to pursue pro-growth policies that will help grow our economy, create jobs, increase wages, and lift the burden that the federal government has placed on businesses, small and large.  I’d also like to work with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development to build more partnerships with local economic development organizations.  Completing and encouragement of “The Heartland Express” north and south connector to allow for easier transportation and assist with building roads and bridges again.

What is your favorite Black Hills Area business to support?

I support all local businesses alike.  I truly support the businesses that put down their roots and invest their time, efforts, and money, that make our state a better place to live and be.

Many local businesses continue to struggle amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. What programs or other actions would you support in the next six months to aid economic recovery?

I would use the earmarked federal funds to fight COVID-19 rather than spend it on tourism. Using those funds to invite people to visit our state while our COVID-19 numbers continue to rise is irresponsible and demonstrates a fundamental lack of leadership on behalf of our governor.

What do you believe is vital to promoting quality economic growth in western South Dakota?

We need to improve our communities so out-of-state people are more enticed to visit or move to our state. I understand we have issues recruiting Doctors, Nurses, and other professionals due to what they perceive to be sub-standard educational facilities among other (what they consider to be) basic needs.

What is your favorite Black Hills Area business to support?

Whenever possible, I do my best to support all local business. My biggest issue as a consumer is not finding what I need at local businesses, so I am often forced to look towards large, out-of-state companies to make purchases outside of many basic needs.
