Many local businesses continue to struggle amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. What programs or other actions would you support in the next six months to aid economic recovery?

In addition to supporting CARES Act funds going to help bolster our food supply chain, if elected, I plan to propose a series of food freedom measures to reduce burdensome regulations on our cattle operations and other food producers. The "Big Four" beef packers have a near-monopoly on the market, in large part due to stringent regulations that act as barriers to entry for smaller competitors. As we saw with the Smithfield Foods COVID crisis, it is not only good economics to allow local meat processors to compete with larger pack operations, but it's also in the best interest of our state's safety and security. I will work with ranchers and farmers to help ensure their way of life can continue.

What do you believe is vital to promoting quality economic growth in western South Dakota?

Industry diversification is absolutely critical. We can only watch in horror as our neighbors next door in Wyoming are facing an $800 million budget shortfall as their economic mainstay has suffered drastically in the fallout from COVID. South Dakota is "only" projected to be short $20-40 million, but we could have been much worse had tourism taken the hit everyone was anticipating. In addition to making sure our agricultural operators are able to keep producing, we must continue to work on bringing in new industries to our state. I am eagerly watching the progress of Elon Musk's low-elevation satellite broadband venture called Starlink. The combination of high-speed, low-latency satellite internet in rural areas and the recent widespread adoption of work-at-home policies will mean larger companies being able to take advantage of our state's business-friendly tax environment and job-ready workforce.

What is your favorite Black Hills Area business to support?

With so many great area businesses, it would be hard to narrow it down to a couple dozen, but picking just one overall favorite is easy: The Alpine Inn!

Many local businesses continue to struggle amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. What programs or other actions would you support in the next six months to aid economic recovery?

My efforts to aid economic recovery have to do with the private sector, more specifically small businesses. These businesses are the bill payers and I’m working on using this one-time COVID money to relieve them from some of the losses during this pandemic. Municipalities, Schools, and County governments will still be around if they do or do not receive any of these funds. At least the private sector should be helped first then on to Government agencies second.

What do you believe is vital to promoting quality economic growth in western South Dakota?

What is vital to economic growth in western SD is a complex question. We have a lot of growth coming because of the pandemic and citizens from around the country moving here because we remained free. Also, we have the expansion of Ellsworth AFB with the B-21 Raider Squadron coming online along with a Squadron for the training mission of this Stealth Bomber. Because of all of this, additional Schools, affordable housing, infrastructure improvements to name just three areas that are being vastly impacted
here.

What is your favorite Black Hills Area business to support?

My favorite BH business to support would be Ellsworth AFB. Probably because I’m a retired Soldier and understand the importance of National Defense and the economic boom it brings to the Black Hills!!
